A day dedicated to the art and elegance of small medieval villages, from Soave to Marostica, from Cittadella to Castelfranco Veneto
What will we do:
Our guide will meet you at your hotel, explain the program of the day before leaving Verona to cross the last stretch of the Po Valley that ends in Venice. Our first stop will be Soave, as well as for the wine that bears his name, Soave, a small village about thirty kilometers from Verona, is known for the Castle, whose presence is attested since 934. This village whose name is most likely linked to the presence of the Suaves, or the Swabians – also houses the walls built in 1369 at the behest of Cansignorio della Scala.
Marostica, in addition to being known all over the world for the chess game that takes place every two years with living characters since 1923, and for the famous cherry, this picturesque village will captivate you with its promenade that joins its two castles. A mighty crenellated wall connects, in fact, the two fortresses giving life to a charming village overlooking the plain.
Lying on the ancient vestiges of a Roman past that the early Middle Ages have partially erased, the village of Cittadella, with its imposing walls and characteristic rounded plan, is one of the most interesting centers of Veneto. The foundation of this charming walled city dates back to 1220, when Padua decided to create a fortified place in the center of the Venetian plain to protect the areas of the countryside from Treviso and Vicenza.
At sunset, when the illuminated Castle becomes an almost fairytale presence, it is the perfect time to get lost among the clubs of Piazza Giorgione or to stroll through the ancient buildings of Corso XXI Aprile. Although it is not really a village – since it is the third largest municipality in the province by population after Treviso and Conegliano – the origins of Castelfranco have their roots in the wall settlement founded between 1195 and 1199. Just the memory of the mysterious life of Giorgione, the enigmatic artist who made Castelfranco famous all over the world, to fascinate visitors.
